China’s BOE Technology is preparing to supply Apple with OLED displays for future iPad and MacBook models. Elec reports,
In preparation for Apple’s supply requirements, BOE will build a Gen 8.6 OLED display panel production line at its B16 factory in China’s Sichuan province. Elec, The new production line will reportedly open in late 2024. The company plans to supply South Korea’s Samsung Display and LG Display to Apple with OLED panels for future iPad and MacBook models.
Both Samsung and LG are said to have used Gen 6 production lines for their first OLED panels for the iPad, before Gen 6 for various Apple devices starting after the launch of the first iPad models with OLED displays. 8.5 Production lines to be used. Gen 8.5 production lines offer more OLED panels per substrate than Gen 6 lines and are therefore more cost-effective.
BOE is also testing two-stack tandem OLED technology, which could offer increased brightness and longevity. This two-stack tandem makes OLED displays more suitable for devices such as iPads and MacBooks, as they are often used for longer periods than smartphones.
Elec confirmed that Apple is planning to introduce its first iPad model with OLED display in 2024. A previous report suggested the first MacBooks with OLED displays to be launched in 2025, relying on the success of the new 11- and 12.9-inch OLED iPad Pro models. since last year.
